Reunion Weekend 2014

The Wills Hall Association celebrated another successful Annual Reunion Weekend in July. The Bristol weather, which had been changeable, turned to a warm and bright evening. Once again, the Warden hosted members and their guests to a drinks reception in the his garden followed by a three course dinner in the Hall dining room. It was good to welcome large groups of members from the late 1980s and 2007-08.

Our Speaker was Professor Dame Carole Black, MB ChB 1970, MD 1975, Pro-Chancellor 2008-2012, former President of the Royal College of Physicians and now Principal of Newnham College, Cambridge. On Sunday members enjoyed the church service in the chapel led by the Rt Rev Richard Pain (BA 1979) Bishop of Monmouth and a talk given by Professor Mark Horton entitled “'Bristol and the Creation of the Atlantic World'.

Next year’s Reunion will take place on the later weekend of 11th-12th July. We look forward to welcoming you back.

London Reception 2013

The Annual Wills Hall Association London Reception went ahead successfully thanks to the kind and generous support of Association members and attendees.

The reception was held in the impressive surroundings of the Mall Room at the Royal Automobile Club on Pall Mall. The evening was attended by a wide range of Wills Hall alumni and guests who included Stephen Williams MP.

Bristol was represented by our guests, the Warden, Professor Rivers, who updated those in attendance on recent events and news relating to Wills Hall, including the much-welcomed refurbishment of the bar and the successful installation of picture lights above the Warden portraits in the dining room. We then heard from Alexander Owen, the JCR President, about the JCR’s plans for upcoming formals (including the now traditional Harry Potter formal) and other events and activities for the coming academic year at Wills Hall, including a renewed focus on extra-curricular activities such as the sports teams and WHATS.

Bristol Reception 2013

A warm welcome and log fire greeted members and guests as they arrived at the Warden’s house for this regular event. It continues to provide a focus for ex-Wills members from the South-West to meet and in particular an opportunity for our many student to enjoy one of the benefits of membership on home territory. We were also glad to welcome as guests Stephen Williams MP (1988), Andrew Lucas, Executive Director of Trinity College, Bristol, and his wife. There were lively conversations and an enthusiastic atmosphere throughout the evening.

Through the generous hospitality of the Warden and his wife, Caroline, whom we gratefully thank, we gathered not only in the hall but also in the impressive drawing rooms where the excellent piano playing by Ethan Huang, the Wills organ scholar, was much appreciated.

London Reception 2012

This occasion went ahead thanks to the generous support of Lady Chilver which reflected Lord Chilver’s intention. His death in July deprived us of a wise and thoughtful patron.

Held again in the grand surroundings of the Princess Marie Louise Room at the Oxford and Cambridge Club the evening was enjoyed by a large number of members and guests who included four former JCR Presidents. It was particularly good to see many recent Wills graduates some of whom had got groups together. We were pleased to present Lady Chilver with a framed photograph of her and Lord Chilver at Wills Hall. The inscription plate on the reverse was done by a good friend of the Association who is an artist at the College of Heralds.

Bristol was represented by our guests, the Warden, Professor Rivers, who updated us on some key university matters and the improved facilities now being enjoyed by students at Wills. We then heard from Florence Hunter, the JCR President, about the enthusiastic new intake and the events being planned by them. It was also good to welcome as well Nick Haisman, the Deputy Warden, and Andrew Cumming, the Photographer in Residence.
